Blogging with Students

Can it be done? Absolutely! As an English composition teacher I love the idea of writing with my students and reading their writing on a variety of topics. Blogging is more of a conversation and allows students to revise their thinking as the conversation continues.

  1. Yes, I really think that you're in a great position to use blogs with your writing students. And, if you treat it as a learning experience, they will, too.

  2. I Law Reflections - Richardson's Blog
On the blog we read in class today, Richardson made many worthwhile comments, but I suppose I'm wearing the Black Hat today, because one thing he said struck a discord in me:

“. . .as I noted in an earlier post, [blogs] are a tool with which students can learn to create the truth. I love the idea that these tools allow for “the acculturation of what the truth is.” That’s so important, that concept that these truths can then become a part of the larger culture through publishing.”

People cannot create the truth, but rather that we discover it. (Albeit, many do believe that they invent the truth, but I always thought the usual name for that was "lying.") Richardson claims that this caveat is part of constructivist teaching, however, the premise for constructivist learning or teaching is that students build on pre-existing knowledge. Knowledge is not the same as truth. My knowledge may be that 2 + 3 = 6, but can I then proclaim as truth that 2 + 3 + 6 = 12?
